Do Color Street Nail Strips Damage Your Nails?

If you’ve been thinking about trying Color Street nail strips, there’s also probably something else you’ve wondered:

Do Color Street nail strips damage your nails?

Valid question. Anytime you’re putting something on your natural nails and then removing it later, you want to know what you’re getting into.

The short answer? Color Street nail strips are real nail polish and aren’t inherently damaging to your natural nails.

But (and this is important) the way you apply, wear and remove any manicure can affect the health of your nails.

So, let’s talk about what actually matters.

What Are Color Street Nail Strips Made Of?

Color Street nail strips are made from real nail polish, and include the base coat, color coat and top coat – a thin layer of nail polish is applied directly to your natural nail instead of adding length or attaching a false nail.

That doesn’t mean they’re completely maintenance-free, though. Proper nail prep and removal still matter.

Can Applying Nail Strips Damage Your Nails?

Generally, applying nail strips shouldn’t damage healthy natural nails when they’re applied correctly. The biggest thing is to avoid aggressively filing or scraping your natural nail during application.

You only need to file away the excess strip (and you don’t even really need to do that in a lot of cases – I don’t). Plus your nails don’t need to be perfectly buffed or roughened up for the strip to stick. In fact, overbuffing your nails can make them thinner and weaker over time.

What About Removing Color Street?

When a manicure comes off and your nails look dry, rough or flaky, it’s easy to assume the product caused the damage.

But sometimes the problem is actually how the manicure was removed.

The biggest thing you can do is:

Don’t peel or pick your nail strips off. I know. But don’t. Peeling off a manicure can take some of the surface layers of your natural nail with it.

Instead, use nail polish remover. I personally think acetone removers get a bad rap but your nails may be different. Sometimes, the removers can cause damage. Color Street makes a remover that is specially formulated to remove nail strips and is gentle on nails. I use it often and it works well. You can read more about removal as well as other removers I like here.

Can Your Nails Look Different After Removing Nail Strips?

They can. You might notice some dryness or changes in the appearance of your nails after removing a manicure.

That doesn’t automatically mean your nails have been damaged by Color Street. Your nails can become dry from repeated exposure to remover, frequent manicures, picking, filing, or simply not giving your nails and surrounding skin enough moisture.

That’s why nail care between manicures matters. Use cuticle oil regularly, moisturize your hands and be gentle with your natural nails.

What If My Nails Are Already Damaged?

If your nails are already peeling, splitting, unusually thin or otherwise damaged, I’d focus on getting them back to a healthier state. You can’t heal damaged nails, but you can take care of them so they grow out stronger.

And if you notice a significant or persistent change in your nails, it’s a good idea to talk with a healthcare professional or dermatologist rather than assuming your manicure is the cause. Your nails can change for lots of reasons, and not every nail problem is caused by a cosmetic product.

4 Ways to Protect Your Nails While Wearing Color Street

If you love wearing nail strips, these simple habits can help keep your natural nails in good shape.

1. Start with clean, dry nails

Proper prep helps the strips adhere without requiring aggressive buffing or other unnecessary steps.

2. Don’t pick at your manicure

If an edge starts lifting, resist the urge to pull it off.

3. Remove your strips properly

Use nail polish remover and take your time.

4. Moisturize between manicures

Cuticle oil and hand cream can help keep the skin around your nails moisturized.

So, Does Color Street Damage Your Nails?

For most people, properly applied and properly removed Color Street nail strips shouldn’t damage healthy natural nails. The bigger concern is what happens around the manicure like aggressive filing, picking, peeling, improper removal and neglecting nail care.

And that’s true whether you’re using nail strips, traditional polish or press-ons.
